Bed Rest For Back Pain? Think Again.
In some cases, going the bed rest route and taking a day or two off from work to “rest your back” can quickly resolve a temporary back strain.
However, prolonged immobilization may have adverse effects such as depression, blood clots in the legs, muscle atrophy, or even muscle splinting (that’s when the muscle become extremely tight and contracted).
In fact, a 1996 Finnish study found that the people who, following the onset of lower back pain, kept moving without bed rest had better back flexibility than those who rested in bed for a week.
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says on its website that “Exercise may be the most effective way to speed recovery from low back pain and help strengthen back and abdominal muscles.”
So instead of opting for bed rest and risk further injury, here are several great resources of exercises and stretches that will help heal a sore back and strengthen your core.
